Well, it wasn't easy, but we finally arrived in Thailand on schedule! United Airlines did everything they could to keep us from leaving the U.S., but we found a way. First, our flight from KC was an hour late taking off so we missed our connection at O'Hare in Chicago for the flight to Tokyo. An agent at the United counter rebooked us to travel from Chicago to Frankfurt, then Frankfurt to Bangkok, and put us in business class for the flight to Frankfurt. So we waited for that flight which was several hours later. About 5 minutes before boarding, they told us we couldn't board because it was "illegal!!!" They claimed that it was "illegal" to let us go that way...saying it was illegal to fly over Atlantic if booked over Pacific...claimed that was an FFA rule. (Not true!) Then they said that there wasn't another flight to Tokyo for 48 hours and we'd have to stay in a hotel. Finally, they decided to go ahead and put us on the Frankfurt flight, but we were not given the business class seats that were then in our name, and we were back in economy plus. (We haven't figured out how it wasn't "illegal" anymore...could it have been the money it would cost to put us up in the Chicago hotel for two nights?) Our third leg was no longer on United, but now on Thai Airlines. We made it to Bangkok (see photo of statue) and caught our last leg to Chiang Mai where Ryan, Maisie, and Ulysses would be waiting for us!Wednesday, November 5, 2008
